No. 02 The house
Lanthorn is a small candle house in Edinburgh’s Old Town. We make eight candles, each named for a place or an hour in Scotland, and pour every one of them by hand in a workshop off the Canongate.
A lanthorn is the old word for a lantern, from the thin panes of horn that lamps used before glass was cheap. Horn doesn’t shine. It glows. That’s what we want from a candle: a light that makes a room feel smaller and warmer, and a scent you notice when you come back into it.

No. 05 The specification
What’s actually in the pot.
- Wax
- British rapeseed wax and Perthshire beeswax, 70/30 by weight. Undyed.
- Wick
- Flat-braided unbleached cotton in three sizes, each tested over twelve four-hour burns.
- Vessel
- Slip-cast stoneware from Stoke-on-Trent, fired to 1,240 °C and glazed inside so it can be used again.
- Fragrance
- 8.5–10% fragrance load, composed with an independent perfumer in London. IFRA 51st Amendment compliant.
- Burn time
- 50 hours 220 g 80 hours 400 g 100 hours 900 g, three wicks
- Batch
- 48 candles to a pour, cured for 14 days.

Every order can go in our charcoal paper with a wax-sealed ribbon for £5$7€6CA$9A$9¥1,100 , with a note written by hand on a card (up to 200 characters). Prices are never shown inside.
