Twenty minutes south of the city the Pentland Hills start, and in August they go purple. By September the heather has faded, and the rowan trees on the lower slopes are heavy with red berries.

Ling is heather, honey and bog myrtle, our most floral candle and still not a sweet one. Rowan is tart berry, dark rose and guaiac wood. We pour it once a year in a single run, and when it’s gone, it’s gone until next autumn.

Both come in heather, a dusty plum-grey glaze.
