A close is one of the narrow stone passages that run off the Royal Mile, steep enough in places to need steps, and dark by four o’clock in winter. Behind every one there used to be a trade: a chandler, a printer, a bookbinder, a tavern.

The two candles in this collection are the smell of those passages at the hour the lamps come on. Lamplighter is beeswax, clove and smoked cedar, and it’s the candle we light when we open the shop. Canongate is frankincense, old paper and leather, drier and quieter, for desks and reading chairs.

Both come in slate, a speckled charcoal glaze that takes on the colour of the room around it.
