- Size
- 400 g · about 80 hours, Ø 9.6 × 10.4 cm
- Vessel
- Slip-cast stoneware from Stoke-on-Trent, fired to 1,240 °C. Glaze: slate, a speckled charcoal. Glazed inside so it can be reused once the candle is finished.
- Wax
- British rapeseed wax and Perthshire beeswax, 70/30 by weight. Undyed.
- Wick
- Flat-braided unbleached cotton, sized to each vessel and burn-tested over twelve four-hour burns.
- Fragrance
- 9% fragrance load, composed with an independent perfumer in London and blended in Edinburgh. Compliant with the IFRA 51st Amendment standards for candles.
- Care
- Trim the wick to 5 mm before every burn. Burn for no more than four hours at a time.
Burning and care
- Trim the wick to about 5 mm (¼ in) before every burn.
- On the first burn, let the melt pool reach the edge of the vessel: about 2½ hours for 220 g, 3½ for 400 g.
- Burn for no more than 4 hours at a time.
- Keep away from draughts, children and pets, on a heat-resistant surface.
- Stop when about 1 cm (½ in) of wax remains.

Contains Eugenol, Limonene, Linalool, Coumarin. May produce an allergic reaction.
Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Burn on a heat-resistant surface, away from draughts and anything that can catch fire. Don’t move the candle while it’s lit or while the wax is liquid. Dispose of contents and container in line with local regulations. If you have a known sensitivity to any of the ingredients above, don’t burn it.

No. 01 The story
Why Lamplighter smells the way it does
For two centuries someone walked the Old Town closes at dusk with a ladder and a flame. The lamps are electric now, but the moment is the same one: the sky goes from grey to blue, and the stone starts to hold the warmth of the windows instead of the day.
Lamplighter was the first candle Elspeth poured in the Canongate workshop, and it’s still the one we light when we open the door. The clove is there for the first minute only, like a struck match. After that it’s beeswax, honeyed and a little resinous, with cedar that has been smoked rather than burned, so it reads as warm wood rather than a bonfire.
It is the least seasonal thing we make. People burn it in December for obvious reasons, and in June because it smells like a room with the windows open and a lamp on.
