- Size
- 220 g · about 50 hours, Ø 8.0 × 8.6 cm
- Vessel
- Slip-cast stoneware from Stoke-on-Trent, fired to 1,240 °C. Glaze: haar, a pale sea-grey celadon. Glazed inside so it can be reused once the candle is finished.
- Wax
- British rapeseed wax and Perthshire beeswax, 70/30 by weight. Undyed.
- Wick
- Flat-braided unbleached cotton, sized to each vessel and burn-tested over twelve four-hour burns.
- Fragrance
- 8.5% fragrance load, composed with an independent perfumer in London and blended in Edinburgh. Compliant with the IFRA 51st Amendment standards for candles.
- Care
- Trim the wick to 5 mm before every burn. Burn for no more than four hours at a time.
Burning and care
- Trim the wick to about 5 mm (¼ in) before every burn.
- On the first burn, let the melt pool reach the edge of the vessel: about 2½ hours for 220 g, 3½ for 400 g.
- Burn for no more than 4 hours at a time.
- Keep away from draughts, children and pets, on a heat-resistant surface.
- Stop when about 1 cm (½ in) of wax remains.

Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Burn on a heat-resistant surface, away from draughts and anything that can catch fire. Don’t move the candle while it’s lit or while the wax is liquid. Dispose of contents and container in line with local regulations. If you have a known sensitivity to any of the ingredients above, don’t burn it.

Why Machair smells the way it does
Machair is the low, flowering grassland that sits behind the white beaches of the Outer Hebrides. For most of the year it’s just short turf. In June it turns into a meadow of clover, buttercup, orchids and sea thrift, all of it about ten centimetres high and all of it moving in the wind.
We wanted a green candle that wasn’t “cut grass”, which fades within minutes. Machair opens with lemon peel and the dry, hay-like green of marram, then settles into clover and a powdery orris that smells a little like warm skin. Vetiver and a sand accord keep it grounded through the whole burn.
It’s our summer candle, and the one we light in the shop on the first warm day of the year.
